Welcome to the last edition of the Owl's Den of the year. I hope you have all enjoyed the ride and without all of your feedback the Den would not have made it this far. From top 10 countdowns to my thoughts and opinions on the wrestling industry, i have brought you my opinion and haven't held back my thoughts on anything. I thank all of you for reading and enjoying the Den. Last week on Monday Night Raw we witnessed the WWE's Slammy Awards which is there end of the year awards and if you are like me you felt very unsatisfied by there choices. Well today I will present to you The Owl's Den End of the Year Awards and they will not just be about the WWE they will encompass wrestling as a whole. Over the last few weeks I have been searching for a theme song for the Den and I have found one and it will be debuting on the first edition of the Owl's Den of the new year. Also for the new edition I have a big surprise with the Den that you will all enjoy.. I would have never thought the Den would grown from a Top 10 Countdown idea to what it has become today and it will only continue to get better. Remember everyone if you have any questions that you would like me to answer PM them and I will answer them on the next edition, or if you would like to be a special guest on the Den let me know and we will work something out. Now finally before I start there will be two new sections added to the Den as of this edition and I hope you enjoy them. Now sit back and relax and enjoy the End of the Year awards presented to you by the Owl's Den and WWE Europe. Welcome ladies and Gentlemen to End of the Year Awards. Tonight I will give out awards in 9 categories to the best of the best. Last night on Raw we say the WWE's version of an award show and in my opinion it was utter shit and then we will probably see TNA's shitty version soon enough, it seems as though both companies dictate there awards based on story lines but here at the Owl's Den things aren't done that way, Awards are given out based on being the best. The following are the 9 categories in which awards will be given: Match of the Year Tag Team of the Year BreakOut Star of the Year Best Show of the Year Female Wrestler of the Year Most Shocking Moment of the Year Feud of the Year Finisher of the Year Wrestler of the Year But now before I move on to the awards I would like to debut the newest feature that will be added to the Den from this edition onwards. It is called Owl's Song of the Week, and I will introduce a new song every week. Now some of you music fanatics out there may know the songs but not everyone may know it. But if there is a song that any of you know that you don't think many people know or a song that people know and you just want to see it on the Den PM me and we will work something out. Now lets move on to the first song for Owl's Song of the Week. I was listening to the XM radio in the car, it was on the rock station, which plays a variety of music. But let me move on lol.. This song came on and i was like wow this is a great song. I am one to not usually like new music as it sounds bland and boring but this song came on and caught my attention. I was like wow this song is pretty good and that other people should here. So here it is as the first song of Owl's Song of the week the song is called The New Breed by the band Oh, Sleeper. I hope you enjoy it Now its time for the End of the Year Awards. Presented by The Owl's Den. Here it goes, if you do not agree or have any problem with who i have given the awards to please state as to why you think the awards were not deserved. The first award that is given out will be for the Match of the Year. The last year of wrestling gave us many great matches from WWE,TNA,and Dragon Gate USA and many other promotions around the world. The following are the 6 nominees for the Match of the Year Award. DragonGate USA- Enter The Dragon- Naruki Doi vs. Shingo WWE- WrestleMania 25- Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker TNA- Genesis- Alex Shelley vs. Chris Sabin WWE- Backlash- Edge vs. John Cena TNA- LockDown- Mick Foley vs. Sting WWE- Extreme Rules- Chris Jericho vs. Rey Mysterio All of the matches listed above are some of the best matches of the last year and there are a lot more great matches that took place over the last year but these 6 are my personal favorites of the year. Before i announce the winner, I recommend to any of you who haven't seen some of these matches that you watch them and see how amazing they are for yourself. This award could have gone to any of the matches I listed but in my opinion to truly be a match of the year, a match has to make you suspend your disbelief and draw you into the match. All of the nominated matches did that and that is why it was so hard to select the match of the year and hopefully next year it will be a bit easier. But Now without further a due... The Award for Match of the Year goes to........ Alex Shelley vs. Chris Sabin for there match at Genesis for the X-Division Championship last January. Now I know a lot of you won't agree with this pick but this match when I saw i knew it was gonna be the best match i saw all year. This match had everything a match needs and these guys are two of the best in the wrestling world and on the TNA roster. From there ring entrances to the moment the bell rang this match was wall to wall excitement and had me on the edge of my seat the whole match. An honorable mention goes to the second place match The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 25. Now don't get me wrong that was a great match and it stood out for the WWE and i really enjoyed it, but I enjoyed the Shelley/Sabin match more as it set the standard for match of the year at the beginning of the year. Now lets take a look back at the match that won Match of the Year.. Enjoy The next award that will be given out is for Tag Team of the year. The tag division in wrestling is nothing compared to what it used to be. But there were still a lot of great tag teams over the last year and the ones that were nominated were the best and put on good matches all year. With all the great teams going out there and busting there asses and putting on great tag matches hopefully this will be the rebirth of Tag Team wrestling and hopefully next year it will be a lot harder to pick the top 6. The following are the 6 nominees for the Tag Team of the Year Award. TNA- Beer Money Inc. WWE- Priceless DragonGate USA- The Young Bucks WWE- Jeri-Show TNA- The Motor City Machine Guns ROH- The American Wolves If you have been living under a rock you would have missed all the great moments that these teams provided and they helped pave the way for what is hopefully a rebirth of Tag Team Wrestling. All of the teams showed why tag wrestling is the greatest and hardest type of match in the industry. But lets move on to who wins the award.. The Award for Tag Team of the Year goes to........ Matt and Nick Jackson.. The Young Bucks The Young Bucks hail from southern California where they busted onto the wrestling scene in 2004 and they very quickly developed a good friendship with former WWE Star and former member of The Rockers Marty Jannetty. The Bucks honed there skills all over the US with the help of the NWA before going to Japan where they really stepped up there game. The Bucks signed with DragonGate in early 2008 where they have been working and became one of the best tag teams in the company. Not much was heard from the Bucks here in the US until late May when they made there debut with ROH and went on to face the top teams in the company and each match being great. They remain undefeated in ROH as a team. On the 25th of July, they debuted with DragonGate USA and put on a clinic in what was considered one of the two matches of the night at the first ever DGUSA PPV. Since there return to the US they have become one of the most talked about indie teams and they are often compared to The Rockers. Many say that the future is very bright for these two young stars and that the sky is the limit and I have to agree with that. 2009 was the year of the Young Bucks and I have a feeling 2010 will be no different. Lets take a look at the at the Tag Team of the Year. Now we move on to the Award for Breakout Star of the Year. There were a lot of guys in 2009 that really stepped up there game and busted there asses to make it to the next level. Just like the previous 2 awards it was hard to narrow it down to the top 6 but here they are. The following are the 6 nominees for the Breakout Star of the Year Award. WWE- CM Punk WWE- Kofi Kingston WWE- Drew McIntyre WWE- Sheamus TNA- Desmond Wolfe WWE- Jack Swagger All of these guys had a great year and hopefully there stars will continue to burn bright and get the pushes they deserve. A breakout star of the year should be someone that made it big this year. Some of these guys debuted just recently, others already making a name for themselves. There is no doubt that these guys will continue to grow and maybe even become Superstar of the Year next year. But now without anymore delay.. The Award for Breakout Star of the Year goes to.... CM Punk It seems as if 2009 was the year of Punk. In January Punk won the Intercontinental Title, then fast forward a few months later and Punk won Money in the Bank for the second time. Over the spring and summer months Punk would make his heel turn and then go on to win his Second and Third World Titles. In the late months of the summer Punk would achieve a feat that would solidify his heel turn by beating Jeff Hardy in a loser leaves SD match. Since his second Money in the Bank win Punk has been in feuds with top talent such as Jeff Hardy,Edge and Undertaker. He has also become a 3 time World Champion. As the year comes to a close CM Punk is still riding high and cementing his name as a main event level star. The future hopefully holds more great things for Punk and hopefully another World Title. Over the last two years Punk has gone from a no one on the ECW brand to a Main Event star and with 2009 being his year and breaking out of his crappy ECW shell and becoming a multi time world champion and IC champion it seems there is nothing the StraightEdge Savior can't accomplish when he sets his mind to it. Lets take a look at why CM Punk is the breakout star of the year. Wow we are already 3 awards in and they are probably all controversial picks. So Far we have awarded Shelley vs. Sabin for Match of the year, The Young Bucks as Tag Team of the Year and CM Punk as the BreakOut Star of the Year. We are only 3 awards in with 9 left to go.. We are now at the award for Best Show of the Year..2009 was full of many great wrestling shows. Unlike the other awards there are only 4 nominees as I felt there were only 4 shows that could even be considered show of the year. The following are the 4 nominees for Best Show of the Year. DragonGate USA- Enter The Dragon WWE- WrestleMania 25 WWE- Survivor Series TNA- Turning Point All of these shows were packed from start to finish full of action. 3 of the show had moments where certain things stood out from others but with the show that won it was jammed packed and it was by far the best wrestling show I have seen in a very long time. And now the Award for Show of the Year goes to..... DragonGate USA- Enter The Dragon The show went from start to finish full of amazing action. This was the first wrestling show in a long time where I was on the edge of my seat for the entire show and caused me to yell at the tv and really get immersed into the action. And if you haven't seen the show I recommend that you find a way to watch it because it is not only the Wrestling Show of 2009 but it is also in the top 5 shows of the decade. Well for all of you who haven't seen the show and even the ones who have lets take a look back at DragonGate USA first PPV. Women's wrestling is one of the many under appreciated forms of wrestling. Many look down upon it and consider it a bathroom break or a time to change the channel. But to many people out there it is slowly becoming one of the fastest rising divisions in wrestling. Women's wrestling has gone from a joke to having some of the best wrestling in the world today. Women's wrestling has greatly increased in popularity in the last 16 years and it continues to grow. There are 6 women that stood out this year and they will all eventually make it into the history books with name like Trish Stratus, Lita and Wendy Richter and many more. The following are the 6 nominees for Women's Wrestler of the Year WWE- Mickie James TNA- Awesome Kong WWE- Melina WWE- Michelle McCool TNA- Tara Independent- Angelina Love Now a lot of you may not agree with who my pick is going to be.. But she really stepped up her game this year and she showed that she has what it takes to put on a great match. She may not put on 5 star matches but she never disappoints. No disrespect to any of the other girls but the better woman won. The Award for Female Wrestler of the Year goes to..... Angelina Love Angelina really stepped up her game in 2009 and busted her ass to show that she was one of the best on the TNA roster. She went on to win her first KnockOut title at Lockdown. Love winning the title increased ratings for all Knockout segments and matches. Before her title win the ratings for the division were floundering after loses of talent. Angelina's title win and her partnership with Velvet Sky helped keep the Knockout's division afloat and revitalized it. During her reign as champion she put on great matches with Tara, Awesome Kong, Taylor Wilde and many others. In September due to visa issues Love was forced to leave TNA but hopefully she will return in 2010 and Female Wrestler of the Year again. A lot of people may complain about her in the ring but I personally enjoyed watching her in the ring over any other female talent this year. Lets take a look at Angelina Love. 2009 wasn't a great year for wrestling in terms of really exciting things happening. But there was a fair share of Shocking Moments that happened. In my opinion the Shocking Moments that happened shook the wrestling world to its foundation and will cause a chain of events that will forever change the future. No matter how strange or shocking you think something is, in wrestling there is always something else right around the corner. The following are the 6 nominees for Most Shocking Moment of the Year Hulk Hogan Signs with TNA Ring Of Honor Signs a TV Deal with HDNET Bret Hart Signs a contract with the WWE Jeff Hardy leaves the WWE Eddie "Umaga" Fatu passes away at the Age of 26 Mr. Kennedy released from the WWE These 6 moments really shocked the wrestling world when they happened. With all of these happening this year there is no way to tell what impact it will have on the world of wrestling. The moment that won deserved to win as no one ever thought that it would ever happen. Some people may say some of the moments are more important than others but they have all effected the wrestling world in equal ways, be it cosmetically or mentally. The Award for Most Shocking Moment of the Year goes to.... Bret Hart Signs a Contract with the WWE This is by far the most shocking out of all the things that happened this year.. And it happens on the cusp of 2009. Bret had stated many times in the past that he had forgiven everyone involving the Screwjob incident but he would never return to the WWE. Bret agreed to be involved in the Hall of Fame ceremony a few years back but stated that he would never be an on screen character again for any organization. But I guess it was true that you can never say never in the wrestling business. As Of December 16th it was announced that Bret Hart signed a contract with the WWE to be an on screen character again and rumor has it he could potentially have one final match. Hopefully he will add more to his historic career with his return. Lets take a look back at the Hitman, The Best There is, The Best there was, and The Best there ever will be. With having made through the first 6 awards, I decided to take a quick break before finishing them and Introduce you to the second new addition to the Owl's Den. Starting from this edition onwards I will have a Match of the Week. Now this match may not be a great match or a 5 star classic but it will be a match that I enjoyed and think should be shared with the world. If you have a match you want to be on the Den let me know and we can work something out. Now the First Match of the Week on the Owl's Den took place on the very last Monday Night Nitro and was the last match between 2 of the greats of the business. Sting vs. Ric Flair. This wasn't the best match that the two had but it was still a very enjoyable match for being a TV match. I hope you all enjoy Now we are back to the awards portion of the Den. We left off with the Shocking Moment of the Year Award and it went to Bret Hart Signing with the WWE. But lets moves on to the next award. There were some great feuds in 2009.. Not as many good ones as there used to be but there were some pretty good ones. Without waiting any longer lets take a look at the nominees. The following are the 6 nominees for Feud of the Year WWE- Randy Orton vs. Triple H TNA- Main Event Mafia vs. The FrontLine WWE- CM Punk vs. Jeff Hardy TNA- Desmond Wolfe vs. Kurt Angle WWE- John Cena vs. Randy Orton TNA- Awesome Kong vs. Tara The Feud of the Year goes to a feud that saw the birth of the best heel in the WWE in a very long time. The feud that won was full of great matches like the two guys or not. The feud that won is also one of the few feuds that actually got the fans emotionally invested in it. I could go on forever praising it but let me announce the winner. The Award for Feud of the Year goes to.... CM Punk vs. Jeff Hardy This was by far the best feud of the year.. Honorable mention goes to Orton and Triple H and Orton and Cena but they didn't come close to this feud. This feud made the fans actually care about it. Love these guys or not they have great chemistry together. This is the feud that gave birth to a heel CM Punk and pushed him through the glass ceiling. Let take a look back at the Feud of the Year. Now we are onto the second to last award and it's for Finisher of the Year. There are many great finishing maneuvers in wrestling today. You may be asking yourselves just what takes to earn Finisher of the Year. Well to qualify for The Finisher of the Year award, the finisher must include, but is not limited to; being able to be hit in an instant, have great crowd appeal, and how impactful it is. There are many moves that included this in the wrestling world this year, but let's take a look at what moves are battling for the award! Unlike the other awards this one will have 8 nominees The following are the 8 nominees for Finisher of the Year WWE- Randy Orton's RKO DGUSA- Shingo's Made In Japan WWE- Christian's KillSwitch DGUSA- Naruki Doi's Muscular Bomb TNA- AJ Styles' Styles Clash WWE- CM Punk's Go To Sleep WWE- Shawn Michaels' Sweet Chin Music TNA- Desmond Wolfe's Tower of London I could put over the Finisher that won the award but talking about it just wouldn't do it justice. This finisher is one of the most entertaining out of all the other ones this year and that is why it won. The Award for Finisher of the Year goes to..... Shingo's Made In Japan Like i stated I could put over this move and how awesome it is, but it wouldn't do it justice. The only thing I can really say is that you should take a look at it. Now some of you may have seen it and know how awesome it is, but for the ones that haven't lets take a look. We are at the end of this edition of The Owl's Den and only 1 award left to go. I would like to thank everyone once again for being a reading of the Den and while there won't be a show again till the new year, I will be posting a thread in the coming days asking for all of your feedback on what you would like to see added to the Den and what you think of the new format of the Den. Well lets move on to the Final Award and that is Wrestler of the Year. The wrestlers that qualified for this award are the best of the best. They are the guys that went out there night after night this year and busted there asses to put on a great match. There were many guys that could of potentially been Wrestler of the Year and it was hard to cut it down to the final 9 nominees. Yes just like the previous award there will be 9 guys that made it, but only 1 will win the award. All the guys that made it this far deserve credit, be it you love them or hate them. The following are the 9 nominees for Wrestler of the Year WWE- John Cena TNA- AJ Styles WWE- CM Punk ROH- Davey Richards WWE- Triple H DGUSA- Naruki Doi WWE- Randy Orton TNA- Kurt Angle WWE- Chris Jericho Before I name the winner of the award, let me say that I know this may cause a lot of bashing and negative feedback from you guys but this is my opinion and if you can argue with the facts i'm about to present without just one liners then I welcome the debate. The man that won this award had a great year he went out there night in and night out and busted his ass for the fans wether they cheered or booed him. But enough with talking about the person. Let me reveal who it is.. The Award for Wrestler of the Year goes to... John Cena While the other nominees have had good 2009, I think Cena's has year has been exceptional. Cena's rise to Wrestler of the year started in late 08 on a high note coming back from his neck fusion surgery to claim the World Heavyweight Championship from Chris Jericho which he kept until No Way Out. Despite the bump of loosing the title at NWO; Cena would be defiant and would find himself inserted in the World Heavyweight Championship triple threat match at WrestleMania XXV where he amazed thousands by hoisting Big Show and Edge up on his shoulders together and delivering an FU that rocked Reliant Stadium as a result he would capture his second WHC. His title reign wouldn’t last long as the Big Show reared his ugly head everywhere John Cena turned. At Backlash Show would help Edge regain the title by choke-slamming Cena into a search light. Show and Cena would start a feud after this where Cena would overcome the odds and eventually vanquish Big Show. Amongst the back and forth battles with Big Show, Cena found himself intertwined in yet another feud with up-and-comer Miz who was looking to solidify his place in the WWE by picking up victory over him. Cena and Miz eventually had a match at the Bash where Cena and Miz had the match of the night and even though Cena won he helped establish Miz on the RAW brand. Shortly after he worked his way back in the title hunt against an old time rival: Randy Orton. Every encounter they had: Summerslam, Breaking Point, Hell in a Cell, Bragging Rights — every match got better and better and more brutal each encounter. The two traded the title in the late summer and fall months with Cena eventually ending his feud with Orton after a grueling 60 minute Iron Man Match at Bragging Rights where he would regain the title. He would go on to successfully defend the title against DX in a triple threat match at Survivor Series and then he would end the year on a bump when he put over rookie Sheamus in a tables match. Not only has he done alot in the ring this year he has a had a great year outside the ring. He's done countless things for the make a wish foundation and other charities. Cena is a man that would bleed for the WWE and for his fans.. No matter if you boo him or cheer him he will still try his hardest to put on a great match. And hell even though it wasn't this year he is one of the few men to take Khali to a good match and thats saying something.. Love him or hate him, you can't deny he has everything it takes to make it in the business. Let's take a look at the Superstar of the Year. Well thats it for this Final Edition for 2009. I hope you all enjoyed it and in January the Den will return with a format similar to this. Also feel free to PM me any questions you would like to ask me or anything you'd like to see added to the show.. I hope you have all enjoyed the End of the Year awards and would love to see you feedback on them. Well this is it for this edition and I will see you all in the new year... Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year |

Sabin/Shelley? Match went back and forth like a metronome with next to no selling or story-telling, no real shock or sense of risk or reward involved. Odd choice. Why wasn't Sheamus winning the WWE Championship a nominee for shocker of the year? Umaga was 36... Edited by Seal, Feb 17 2010, 08:49 PM.

i know how old Umaga was, its called a typo.. and i enjoyed the Shelly/Sabin match more than any other match last year. And i did't see him winning the WWE Title as a shock as if you have been watching wrestling as long as i have you can tell when someone is usually gonna win the title by the push they get before it. |

I give you credit for being impartial though mostly, I might have to check out DragonGate sometime in the future. I've been avoiding Japanese wrestling up until now because of the lack of availability and lack of emphasis on character making me pessimistic, but it might be a nice refresher to dip into every few weeks when I'm oversatiated with WWE and TNA. I also would have given tag team of the year to Legacy, even though I love the British Invasion more than any other group. |

Nah, come on now, nobody saw that coming. Obscure mid-carder with next to no credentials suddenly winning the championship, especially since it was a tables match which would make you think WWE would let him lose, considering the lack of damage involved in that kind of loss would hardly affect his push. |

Agree with some, disagree with a few also but can't argue them because I don't watch Dragon Gate: USA. Personally, I would give the awards as follows: Match of the Year: Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaelss Tag Team of the Year: The American Wolves BreakOut Star of the Year: The Miz Best Show of the Year: Hmmmm, Not much great WrestleMania, Backlash or Turning Point. Female Wrestler of the Year: Think I'd give it to Tara, Angelina second Most Shocking Moment of the Year: I agree with you on "The Hitman's" siigning Feud of the Year: I agree CM Punk vs. Jeff Hardy as much as I hate Jeffery Finisher of the Year: Starship Pain, John Morrison (I think Finisher of Year should only be contested by new finishers created in the year in question, although I'm not sure if Morrison used Starship pain prior to '09 or not) Wrestler of the Year: Chris Jericho |

Why is it so contempo to hate Jeff now? And he did use it before and it's an awful move, it never hits the opponent. I'd give finisher of the year to Matt Morgan's carbon footprint, brutal move.

Well I don't remember seeing it before '09 or maybe it just didn't have the name, yeah thats it it was called a split legged corckscrew moonsault before I think. Well in that case I'd give Finisher of the year to The Young Buck's - More Buck For Your Bang, they've probably used that for years aswell but '09 was my first year watching ROH so.. A running big boot / bicycle kick, Seal seriously, come on! |
