The NHL season will start here in a few weeks, and there really isn't a thread here to discuss it. So well there is now. Any thing and everything to do with the NHL should be discussed here.. And to end this on a happy note, I hope the Wings have a great season this year |

I sometimes check out the Stanley Cup but nothing much other than that. I've tried to get into NHL before but it's very hard considering its on at like 3am and the games they usually show on Channel 5 over here are pretty boring. Oh well... come on Toronto Maple Leafs.

I have a feeling that Alec and myself will probably be exclusive to this thread but if there are any questions, comments, or opinions we would be happy to hear them. Concerning the Pittsburgh Penguins I am excited to see what the Pens can do this season especially since they have sought out to build themselves a strong defense and two new goalies. Jay McKee, Alex Goligoski, Nathan Guenin, and Ben Lovejoy are all going to be the newest editions to their defense after losing Hal Gill and Rob Scuderi. Lovejoy is an excellent player and Goligoski seems to be someone that the Pens expect great things from as they signed him to a multi-million 3-year deal. In other news: The Penguins will be raising their Stanley Cup banner and I am going to try my hardest to make it down to the arena for the show. I didn't get tickets because they were sold out but as you can read from the article the arena has a huge big screen TV outside where fans, who couldn't purchase tickets, are still allowed to watch the game.

Those rings were amazing Alec. They showed the rings before the game last night and if you look at the high quality photos of the rings you can see just how many diamonds are in that son-of-a-bitch. I think they look super nice, honestly. I went down to the Season Opener and stood outside in the pouring rain to see the banner raised at the Mellon Arena for one last time before the building is destroyed. I can't begin to tell you how fun it was to be there will those people and to see over 17,000 people packing that arena. I will be posting some footage later tonight on Youtube and then posting it here for anyone to watch. It would be sweet if anyone could submit any footage they have of themselves at some games here in the thread. |

Sorry for taking so long to respond to this thread Alec. I think that it is good for our team to open the season having the best record because there are still many fans of many teams who think that the Penguins win was a fluke. There are fans out there who truly believe that the referees are in the pocket of the Penguins in order to help them win. There are fans out there who really think that Sidney Crosby, Gary Bettman, and members of the Penguins organization are in some kind of conspiracy that allows them to win games. In my opinion a fan who thinks like that is reaching for anything to justify his/her favorite team's loss. Lately the Penguins have have a few loses with the last 2 being the worst so far. Internet sites are being flooded by fans against the Penguins who have used these two loses to completely discredit everything the Penguins have accomplished so far. Look at the Detroit Red Wings for example. The Red wings were in back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals just like the Penguins - something that hasn't been done since 1983. They haven't had the greatest beginning to their season this year but two facts remain above all else. One: It's only November and there are 7-8 more months of hockey left. Two: It's the fuckin' Detroit Red Wings for Christ sake!! How do you assume that they are anything but a great team? So what they aren't leading the league right now. Does that mean they aren't a good team? Hell no. The same can be said for The Pittsburgh Penguins. While I'm not trying to make any excuses for any of the losses we have recently suffered the truth is that our team is plagued by injuries. Kris Letang, Evgeni Malkin, Max Talbot, Sergei Gonchar, and Tyler Kennedy. That is 5 of our major players from out with injuries. Take five major members of any team out and you will see similar results. It's going to take a few losses, a few experimental line changes, and calling up a few of our younger guys from the AHL before we get our momentum back Look at this question I found of Yahoo Answers. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmmaJ17TWEAvnCQ6Ju8zWK7sy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20091108142453AAsqV9b&show=7#profile-info-eKfldkHraa This is the kind of extremist point of view that I cannot stand. The Penguins have had thier first back-to-back loses after an amazing 7 game win streak, a loss, two more wins, another loss, a win, and then the back-to-back losses. Our team is 1st in the Atlantic and 3rd in the entire league (were 2nd up until the other night) but people like that don't know how to accept the fact that Pittsburgh is a strong team. There is talent there and there is so much anti-Crosby hatred flooding the boards that it sickens me. There are many guys in the NHL that I do not care for personally (Ovechkin for one) but I would be a fool to pretend like I wouldn't want him on my team. I wish other fans could learn to look past their home team pride and see that there are players out there with superb skills that do deserve the recognition they get. You know Alec, they always say the same old things and bring up the same old arguements. - Crosby is a diver - Crosby is a crybaby - Bettman and Crosby have a secret agreement - Pittsburgh has bandwagon fans that weren't around before Crosby came along - The NHL is partial to Crosby and The Penguins - Pittsburgh isn't a good team, they're just lucky Fuck all that. I could argue each statement for days but it's not worth it. I just wish that people could get rid of their blind hatred for the Penguins and accept that their victory was hard earned and deserving of recognition. |

The Pittsburgh Penguins are currently on a 4 game losing streak, the worst streak that they have had all season. In October the Penguins quickly climbed to 1st in the enitre National Hockey Lleague and 1st in their Division (Atlantic) by posting the best win/loss record of any team. The Penguins ended the month of October with an 11-3 record. As November drew closer it the Pittsburgh Penguins seemed to have been cursed with injuries and losses - taking 4 straight loses in 5 games - and their current record (12-7) is a reflection of how losing many of your key players can affect your entire team and their chances of winning. Seven (7) of the 21 members of The Pittsburgh Penguins are injured: Evgeni Malkin, Brooks Orpik, Kris Letang, Sergei Gonchar, Tyler Kennedy, Maxime Talbot, and now Kris Kunitz. Sidney Crosby is also suffering a career worst pointless streak of 5 games. The losses haven't come without some positives for the Penguins though, and they're learning very quickly that each member of the tea has a responsibility to step up and carry the wieght of their teammates. The Penguins, especially Matt Cooke, also don't appreciate the notion that they can't win games without those injured players. It very easy for any non-Penguin fan to assume that the 2008-2009 Stanley Cup Champions The Pittsburgh Penguins aren't a strong team based on their recent performance. It also easy to assume that if you're already ruling out the Penguins as being repeat Stanley Cup Champions you haven't learned anything yet. Many hockey fans are already jumping at the opportunity to call the Penguins a team without strength and depth simply because they have suffered a few losses. Not every team wins them all. It's never been done in the history of professional hockey and, short of a miracle from God himself, it never will. The Penguins are only 19 games into a regular season consisting of 82 games in total. It would seem ridiculous to rule out any team based on their current records. The Penguins play The Boston Bruins tonight at 7:30 and yours truly will be watching. The Penguins showed a ton of heart in their loss Thursday night to the New Jersey Devils even. The score may have been 4-1 with the Devils snagging an empty net goal at the end of the 3rd period, but th Penguins took a lot home with them from that game and you could see how bad they wanted to win. Here's to hoping that The Pittsburgh Penguins win tonight's game against the Bruins so that we can snap this losing streak and make the nay-sayers choke on their own hateful words. GO PENS!! |
